This note was part of a series of - and notes issued in 1942 for use in the North African Campaign of World War II. The notes were regular silver certificates, but with the normal blue Treasury seal replaced with a
    yellow gold
one. This was to make the notes easily identifiable in case a military disaster occurred and the payroll fell into German hands. In such a case, all of the yellow seal notes could have been declared worthless.
As it turned out, the North African Campaign was a success, and these notes continued to be used to pay U.S. troops in the Italian campaign of 1943-1944. They are important monetary souvenirs of the fighting in North Africa and Europe, and they remain valid currency even today!
