Background:
The .00 Hawaii silver certificate overprint note is one of a series of notes (one Silver Certificate and three Federal Reserve Notes) printed during World War II as an emergency issue after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The intent of the overprints was to easily distinguish US currency captured by Japanese forces in the event of an invasion of Hawaii. The government could then render the bills worthless due to their easy identification.
After the war, the government was then faced with a 0 million dollar stockpile of overprint currency. Military officials opted to destroy all of the recalled currency instead of shipping it back to the mainland. The surviving notes are still legal at face value. To this day, the notes remain rare and highly collectible, especially in uncirculated high grades (60 and above).
